The purpose of the Director, Commercial Operations is to lead and develop the Commercial Operations team; including overall responsibility for the strategy within operations in the areas of promotional review and approval, speaker bureau logistics, CRM platform management, promotional labeling, inventory management, conventions and exhibits and pharmaceutical sampling. This position will draft policies and procedures, and provide training, coaching and development to a team of individuals, to align internal and external stakeholders on key processes and systems to support business objectives while ensuring compliance within the pharmaceutical industry.


Team Management

  • Sets a clear vision and guiding principles for the Commercial Operations team in order to support the commercial strategy and goals
  • Collaborates with internal and external partners (including co-promotion partners) of all levels to develop, train and implement operational processes that effect commercial teams from all areas of the business; identifying inefficiencies, and proposing/implementing viable solutions
  • Ensures all logistical and operational support teams and priorities are aligned across all areas of the business as it relates to commercial execution of promotional materials and messaging
  • Acts as operational lead for commercial initiatives and issue resolution
  • Develops metrics and reporting on operational performance and process, and adjusts business process(es) to maximize performance while maintaining compliance
  • Owns management responsibility for a team including coaching and development, training, workload, major project deadlines and resolving escalated issues
  • Manages relationships and performance of multiple marketing operations agencies, vendors and alliance partners, including but not limited to: warehousing and fulfillment, web-based review, exhibit houses, speaker program logistics companies, and print production vendors
  • Oversees and provides direction on the inventory management of all promotional materials to ensure materials are warehoused, maintained, tracked and delivered within budget and are monitored for compliance
  • Oversees the speaker bureau logistics management process to ensure cross-brand collaboration and alignment in the strategy and execution of speaker programs, including but not limited to: speaker nominations, training, aggregate spend reporting, speaker contracting, and speaker portal management
  • Oversees the promotional labeling process to ensure commercial compliance
  • Oversees the US pharmaceutical sampling program across all brands and alliance partnerships while maintaining compliance
  • Aligns internal and external partners on operational processes and procedures ensuring adherence to Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and records documentation
  • Ensures relevant sample management activities are implemented in the CRM system
  • Liaises with cross functional partners to ensure an accurate understanding of the business rules associated with the implementation of our sampling activities
  • Tracks, monitors and reports on sampling activities in the fieldIn conjunction with other Business Effectiveness stakeholders, develops long-term roadmap for the continued evolution of our CRM platform
  • Liases with key stakeholders to understand the ongoing needs of the sales force and to determine how the CRM system can make their role more effective while ensuring compliance with Lundbeck policies
  • Strives to develop holistic solution meeting the needs of both the US and Canadian affiliates
  • Manages Commercial Operations budgets and contracts (approximately $15MM annually)
  • Performs other related duties as assigned


  • Accredited Bachelor's degree
  • 10+ years experience in the pharmaceutical, biotech or medical device industry 6+ years of experience directly involved in marketing operations/services in the pharmaceutical industry 4+ years of people management experience
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills with ability to interface with all levels and functions of Lundbeck employees, external partners, vendors, customers, agencies and affiliates.
  • Demonstrated experience managing projects and working with multi-functional teams
  • Basic understanding of the laws and regulations that govern promotional activity in the pharmaceutical industry


  • Brand marketing or sales experience
  • 5+ years of progressive experience in pharmaceutical marketing operations/services leading issue resolution and process development
  • Experience implementing and/or managing electronic workflow systems
  • Direct experience working with Medical and Regulatory Legal review processes
  • Direct experience in sample compliance/sample operations
  • Strong understanding of laws that govern speaker bureau management and aggregate spend


  • Willingness/Ability to travel up to 15% domestically. International travel may be required.
